La Palma is one of the smaller of the Canary islands, with a surface area of 706 square kilometres and a population of only 80,000.
La Palma's geography is a result of the volcanic building of the island. The highest peaks reach about 2.4 km above sea level, and the foundation of the island reaches more than 3 km below sea level.
The northern part of La Palma is dominated by the Caldera de Taburiente, the largest erosion crater in the world, with a width of 9 km and a depth of 1.5 m.
Like the rest of the Canary islands, the origin of La Palma is volcanic. There have been a number of eruptions in recent history, including those of Tahuye/Tacande (1585), Volcan Martin (1646),
Volcan San Antonio (1677), Charco (1712) and Nambroque/San Juan/Las Manchas (1949) . The most recent volcanic eruption was that of Teneguia in 1971
